Sam Atkin, who ran a 13:18.57/27:26.58 double at the Sound Running Track Meet, was one of the revelations of the two-night event in Southern California. Atkin is a former NAIA athlete at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho and has become an assistant coach there. He is from Great Britain and his 10,000 meter time pushed him up the all-time list to No. 4 in G.B. history and also gave him an Olympic Games qualifying standard. Atkin is unsponsored and was not intending to finish the 10,000 meters, but had signed on to pace it through 5,000 meters and then felt good enough to stay in the race and finish it off. Atkins' twin sister, Jen, is the reigning Miss Great Britain. |
